Overview

Cabo Pulmo, is almost certainly, THE MOST SUCCESSFUL REEF RESTORATION program in the Western Hemisphere, and maybe the world!

In 1995, a smallish, underwater national park was formed by the Mexican government at the request of the fishing families of the tiny village of Cabo Pulmo. Since then, no fishing, or anchoring, has been allowed within the 27 square miles that comprise this underwater park.

Within two decades, the reef sprung back to life in an amazing way. Fish returned, spawned, and grew to maturity in huge numbers, along with turtles, dolphins, and sea lions. According to Octavio Aburto, the marine biologist at the site, the sea life has grown by 500-fold! This is the largest growth rate ever recorded in any protected marine environment worldwide. The reef is now alive with activity. Coral and sea life have become incredibly abundant. Fish swirl in large schools around snorkelers and divers alike. There is great variety in these shallow depths. This is a story that needs to be told and retold, shared, and shared again.

The example set by the little town of Cabo Pulmo, located at the extreme end of Mexico’s Baja peninsula, dramatically delivers hope for the world’s oceans, as it simultaneously provides each of us, with an opportunity to enjoy its magnificent underwater riches.

Cabo Pulmo, is a short two-hour ride from the beaches of the world-famous Cabo San Lucas. An excursion to snorkel or scuba the waters of the national park, ranks right up there with sailing the inside Sea of Cortez on the incredible Island Cat sailing catamaran. Both, are very literally, THE EXPERIENCES OF A LIFETIME!!

Cabo Pulmo, is almost certainly, THE MOST SUCCESSFUL REEF RESTORATION project in the Western Hemisphere. Fish are incredibly abundant, circling in large schools, and huge swarms in variety. A private dive or snorkel boat is provided with a minimum of four snorkelers and/or four divers. Divers and those snorkeling are kept separate at the reef. So, if some of your party plans to scuba, and others want to snorkel, this requires two different boats, and crews and will be charged accordingly. For snorkel or dive groups less than four of either, divers may be grouped with others on a shared boat, the same is true for those snorkeling, at no extra charge.

Snorkel and dive areas are scattered all along the reef. There are at least a dozen well-identified locations that are active with sea life. Your boat captain will typically take you to four different snorkel or dive areas. Exactly where you visit will depend on the winds, sea, and tidal currents. Some days it may be best to spend more time at one location than another. Based on your captain and guide’s considerable knowledge they will decide which areas are best for a particular day.

Ground transportation is included. We pickup you up from your hotel property, or designated area, and transport you directly to the rural area that comprises the Cabo Pulmo National Park. This is all included at no charge.

Sun screen is provided at no charge. Please use ours. It is reef friendly and bio-degradable. There is enough for your trip to the reef, and probably your entire trip to Cabo. (Almost all commercial tanning lotions and sun screens are highly detrimental to corals, reefs, and tropical fish. We want to be part of the solution for reef restoration, not part of the problem.)

Coffee, breakfast pastries, and burritos are provided on your trip to Cabo Pulmo.

Bottled water, sodas, beer, and breakfast bars, are available throughout the day

Each guest receives a canvas shopping-style bag with:

Full-face snorkel mask and sanitary top-mounted snorkel tube.(If you prefer the more traditional mask and snorkel, they are also available.)
Fresh laundered beach towel
Bottle of water
Breakfast bar

The National Park entrance fee is paid by us and included at no extra charge.

A donation is made in your name towards continued reef restoration, along with a photograph of your receiving a Heroes bracelet as proof of contribution.

All snorkel gear is provided

Wetsuit shorties are provided, as desired.

A private dive and snorkel boat is provided for Baja Charter’s guests. It includes a certified national park captain a certified and licensed reef-snorkel guide.

You will be in and out of the water several times. Snorkel and scuba areas are scattered all along the reef. There are at least a dozen well-identified areas that are active with sea life. Your boat captain will typically take you to four different snorkel areas, including a stop at the sea lion colony. Exactly where you visit will depend on the winds, sea, and tidal currents. Some days it may be best to spend more time at one location than another. Your captain and snorkel guide, or dive masters, will decide which areas are best for any given day, based on their considerable knowledge of the area.

Lunch at La Palapa or an alternative restaurant in Cabo Pulmo is provided at no charge. Order from the menu, everything is covered!

The bar is open for Baja Charter guests. Have whatever you like. There is no charge to you. Everything is included.

Your return trip home will include one or two short stops for bathroom breaks. There are liquid refreshments on board your return trip to your hotel, resort, condo, or rental property.

PLEASE NOTE
For snorkel or dive groups of less than four, divers will be grouped with others on a shared boat, the same is true for those snorkeling. If you wish to pay an additional single charge of US $300 to have a private boat with less than four persons in your group, please let us know and we will quickly organize it for you.
